The APA in a few words

THE ASSOCIATION for AUTOBIOGRAPHY and AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL HERITAGE

L’association pour l’autobiographie et le patrimoine autobiographique, founded in 1992, is a convivial association of people interested in autobiography whether they write a diary, the story of their lives, or simply enjoy reading autobiographical writing. It has been officially recognised as an association in the public interest.

The primary objective of l’APA is to contribute to the conservation of autobiographical heritage. It accepts and reads all unpublished texts and documents of an autobiographical nature deposited with it at the public library in Ambérieu en Bugey near Lyons. In this way it has built up a collection of unpublished texts that can be consulted at the library.

L’APA publishes accounts of the documents deposited in the form of ‘echoes’ in its ‘memory bank’ or Garde-mémoire.
These are gradually being put on line on this site. Go to: section Collecte et fonds .

Once a year, l’APA holds ‘Les Journées de l’Autobiographie’, a weekend gathering of its members. It also organises round table discussions, talks by and about diarists (‘Journées du Journal’) and various other activities (public meetings, exhibitions, involvement in education etc.) It maintains links with similar organisations in other countries and fosters international co-operation, particularly within Europe. L’APA has a number of publications including its review, La Faute à Rousseau, published three times a year and Les Cahiers de l’APA that deal with particular themes. Go to: section Publications

The members of the association meet if they wish at a local level to share their interests, often working together on a particular theme inspired by the reading or the writing of autobiographical texts. These groups, the grass roots of l’APA, are important in that they take initiatives and undertake publication ventures that reflect the interests of their members. Go to: section Groupes

L’APA is run by a board of 21 members elected at the annual general meeting in March. It meets three times a year but is run on a daily basis by six members (Sylvie Jouanny, Véronique Leroux-Hugon, Philippe Lejeune, Martine Lévy, Françoise Manaranche and Bernard Massip.) The Chairman is Philippe Lejeune.

L’APA exists mainly due to subscriptions from its members. If you are interested to join, you can download the membership form : Vous pouvez télécharger ici le bulletin d'adhésion
